This introduction provides a background to Wikis in general and to the purposes of the Street Lawyer homelessness advocacy Wiki in particular.
A Wiki is just a webpage with multiple authors. Any registered user on this Wiki can edit most pages, insert links to other websites, and post attachments. Through this process, we hope to gather the best materials, practices, and ideas for the advocacy.
We have divided this Wiki into two main parts, the Community Forum and the Advocacy Manual. To access resources on the Advocacy Manual, click on the "Manual" link on the toolbar above or the link on the home page. The Advocacy Manual contains a wealth of resources covering an array of issues relevant to homeless persons. These resources range from simple fact sheets for homeless persons that explain their legal rights to legal pleadings for attorneys to assist them in filing litigation.
The second part of the Wiki is the Community Forum. The Community Forum includes news items from national and local homelessness advocacy groups. Where possible, we have included rss news feeds that link directly to news items on other websites in order to provide a single source for up-to-date news. We also invite registered users to add news item of their own. The Community Forum also includes a shared calendar containing information about audio trainings, conferences, and advocacy gatherings of interest to our community. In addition, the Community Forum includes a discussion area where you can pose questions and get information from like minded advocates. The news, calendar and discussion areas of the Community Forum can be accessed through the links on the menu above or from the links on the Community Forum home page. In the future, we hope to add social networking features to the Community Forum so that advocates can get to know one another, meet other advocates with similar interests, build coalitions, and support campaigns to effectuate policy changes.
This is a collaborative WIKI!
We want to get input from as many practitioners as possible. You can also add additional links, insert text comments, media or other material. The Sandbox is a great place to practice editing pages! For general instructions on how to create and edit pages, see the Full Notation Guide.
