Local homeless shelters are reporting that an increasing number of people are requesting to use their services.

Judy Hanish, executive director of Sand Castle Shelter for Homeless Children and Families, said she has seen an increase since January in people requesting to stay at the shelter.

"It used to be single dads and single moms, but now we're getting more families," she said.

WASHINGTON — At 18th Street and M Street, there is a park with a water fountain that doesn't work. As temperatures creeped above 100 in the nation's capital, a dry fountain doesn't do the city's homeless population any good.

Scattered throughout city parks, at risk of heat stroke or exhaustion, homeless people struggled to stay cool and hydrated as a heat wave gripped the East Coast on Tuesday

A recent report by the NLIHC found that an individual working full-time at minimum wage cannot afford the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in any state in the US.

The United States Government Accountability Office issued the report: "HOMELESSNESS:
A Common Vocabulary Could Help Agencies Collaborate and Collect More Consistent Data," which analyzed the many definitions of homelessness, and how these varied definitions impair organizations from collaborating to meet the needs of homeless individuals.
