CACFP Fact Sheet |
| |
What is the CACFP program? |
The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal nutrition entitlement program, which helps provide meals to children. The program can be used to reimburse meals for children living in homeless or domestic violence shelters. Each state has a State Child and Adult Care Food Program agency, usually located in the State Department of Education. |
CACFP Helps Children in Shelters |
Provides reimbursements to homeless and domestic violence shelters for meals and snacks served to children age 18 and under. |
Which children are eligible? |
All children who live in a homeless or domestic violence shelter are eligible if they are 18 years of age or younger. Families are not asked to prove their income or fill out any paperwork for their children. |
How much $ does a shelter receive? |
Participating shelters receive:
Breakfast |
Lunch & Dinner |
Snack |
Shelters can be reimbursed for up to 3 meals a day or two meals and one snack each day. For example, a shelter that provides breakfast to 30 children for 30 days, would receive a total reimbursement of $1,314. Shelters can also receive commodities or cash-in-lieu of commodities reimbursement of 19.5 cents for each lunch or supper. |
What are the record keeping requirements? |
Record keeping requirements are relatively minimal. Shelters must keep a record of how many children receive meals each day, the total number of meals served by type (breakfast, dinner, etc), and menus for the meals and snacks served to children. |
What type of food does the shelter have to serve? |
Shelters must follow a basic USDA meal plan to receive CACFP reimbursements. Each meal must include meat or a meat alternative, a vegetable and/or fruit, fluid milk, and bread. In addition, the meals must be served in a congregate setting. |
How does a shelter apply for CACFP funds? |
The shelter must contact their state's CACFP agency. See below for a list of state agencies. |
