The United States remained silent while Syria and Lebanon said at the United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee on November 15 that Israel is a country of "war lovers" and is the source of terrorism in the Middle East. However, in the nine committee resolutions against Israel this month, the United States either abstained or voted against them.

For the first time in its history, the United States defended its human rights record before the United Nations Human Rights Council under the new Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process last week. Its presentation before the council and its subsequent Town Hall meeting with various nongovernmental organizations was the culmination of an extensive process in soliciting input, as required by the UPR process, on the state of human rights in the U.S.

These include economic and social rights, and the Geneva review was a historic occasion for advocates for economic and social justice. The State Department last week submitted a report to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the first time the United States has provided such a self-accounting under the U.N.’s Universal Periodic Review. The basic message is that the United States is deeply flawed, injustice abounds, but the Obama Administration is bringing us into a new age of enlightenment and justice.

In a police-secured, airless room full of Geneva journalists, Julian Assange, creator and director of Wikileaks, today gave details of what he described as United States abuse of human rights in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, as well as an alleged muzzling of US press on those subjects.
