While D.C. prepared for its June 5th hearing with the Special Rapporteur on Racial Discrimination, countless other organizations in various cities were doing the same. Miami was another stop during Mr. Diène's three-week tour.
In Miami, the Miami Coalition for the Homeless helped coordinate a panel of seven NGO's reporting on topics relating to racial discrimination in homelessness and housing, including homelessness, the gentrification of inner city neighborhoods, the destruction of public housing, farmworker housing, loss of mobile home housing through redevelopment, the subprime mortgage crisis, and discrimination in therental and sale of housing. The panel was one of 5 during a day-long presentation to Mr. Diene on June 2, 2008.
