On November 22, 2008, the San Mateo County Times reported that "the economic downturn is lending a new face to hunger and homelessness in San Mateo County — and making it harder for shelters and food pantries to cope with overwhelming demand going into the holiday season. ... Homeless for the first time in their lives, many are middle class families with parents who couldn't afford the rent after losing their jobs or men and women with part-time jobs who can't afford to buy their own food or renters who suddenly lost their homes when the owner was foreclosed on."
